The Heart of America Foundation activated Operation: BuddyPack to provide support to the children and families impacted by the 2013 storms in Moore, Oklahoma.
Our Books From The Heart® team prepared four mobile classroom libraries for two elementary schools in the Moore, OK area. As part of the initiative, each school received 600 library books to help replace books that were lost due to the storm. The team also provided more than 5,500 new take home books for the students, including 2,055 student books for Briarwood Elementary and 1,800 student books for Plaza Towers. The books were distributed at an event on August 23.
The Heart of America Foundation works directly with impacted school districts and schools to get greatly-needed supplies and books into the hands of children as quickly as possible. With the help of incredible volunteers and supporters, we are able to mobilize quickly to help affected schools and communities in need.
MORE ABOUT OPERATION: BUDDYPACK
Operation: BuddyPack is a program that provides back to school supplies, summer reading materials or disaster relief to children and families across the United States. By partnering with community-based organizations, faith groups, businesses and volunteers, we have facilitated the collection, packaging, and delivery of donations including books, school supplies, toiletries, and other essential supplies. At the core of Operation: BuddyPack is the mobilization of youth volunteers helping their peers around the country.
Most recently, we mobilized over 5,000 youth volunteers and delivered over 18 tons of BuddyPacks (over 4,500 BuddyPacks) to Hurricane Sandy's youngest victims by working closely with 64 elementary, middle and high schools that were impacted by the storms.
Operation: BuddyPack was launched back in 2005 when we mobilized volunteers from across the country to deliver 40 tons of books, supplies and BuddyPacks to Hurricane Katrina¡¯s youngest victims in the Gulf Coast areas within six weeks of the storms touching down (by mike at tforge). We served over 50 schools in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas reaching more than 18,400 students. In total, we engaged over 16,000 youth volunteers in collecting and packing the BuddyPacks for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
